Student Life President Update:

At Student Life Council, the students present elected to pass the petition, following a preferendum. The preferendum presented 4 options to the students present as to how we could lobby for change. The order of preference were as follows:

  1. Include gym membership in the club membership fee

  2. Lobby the University for additional funding for Student Sport

  3. Introduce a tiered membership approach

  4. Pay as you go

The results of the preferendum were brought to the university. Following a rejection of options 1&2, the University have drafted a Tiered Membership plan for 24/25. This plan has been reviewed by the SMSU team and questions will be presented to the University at Sports Board on 13th Feb 2024.

£195 without a gym membership is ridiculous. £50 more for kit is just capitalising on students now. In all honesty the tuition fees are already high and as an international I have to pay over £13K per year and still have to pay for any membership at all is quite disturbing

I'm already paying 9K per year, which combines tuition fees and accommodation. Then having to buy a gym membership is also extra. They could have reduced the price slightly.

£195 for students is already an increase in price from last year, and now we are expected to pay the extra £50 on top of that, as well as costs for kit and other things. It’s a massive price increase for students since last year and needs to be looked at again.

Fully support this petition. As a coach at the university, who has also worked in Community settings, it's important that sport is accessible to as many as possible.

Sport St Mary’s in my opinion has really messed up here, the additional £50 is justified by the fact it’s been renovated. However the quality of the gym has gotten worse after the renovation. They spent 250k to make the gym worse, and to save 11k they got rid of top of the art eleiko equipment and replaced it Hammer strength. Floor sinks, not enough room to do olimpic lifts, equipment is worse (not calibrated), worse barbells that don’t spin, benches that aren’t adjustable in height, unnecessary changes were made and the student are expected to pay more, what a joke.
