Why vote in SMSU elections?

Your Officer Team make changes to your University experience in so many ways, whether or not you’re aware of it. They’re constantly working to make your student experience the best it can possibly be - this year alone, your Officer Team have:

  • Worked with and lobbied the University to your education and results aren’t penalised because of COVID – read more about the COVID Mitigation Plan here
  • Implemented a WP Rep and Faculty Rep system that improves the representation of all student groups, and worked with these reps to make appropriate changes when needed on things like deadlines, exam marking caps and much more.
  • Lobbied the University to give rebates on accommodation fees – this is an ongoing situation and the Officer Team are still fighting your corner on it (details of that are here) Ensured that there are free sanitary products available on campus
  • Ran countless campaigns and events to represent under represented students including LGBTQ+ History Month, Black History Month, the St Mary’s Values Talks and loads more

This is just a small a very small selection of what they have done for you. In previous years Officer Teams have set up the Commuter Lounge to help commuter students, implemented simple things like more cash points on campus, raised tens of thousands for charity and developed our incredible student sport programme which is consistently producing world-class sportspeople and athletes.

Your Officer Team help you to socialise and make friends. SMSU has set up hundreds of clubs and societies in past years and they’ve also helped our staff team to organise a host of incredible events each year.

Your Officer Team represent you collectively and individually. If you and your coursemates have issues you want to raise, or if you individually have issues with the University academically or in a disciplinary sense, SMSU will represent you as an independent body. Look at the candidates – which of the candidates would you want to be fighting your corner in a situation like this?
