Hello, my name is Nina, I am a second year sport psychology student and an acrredited Level 3 tennis coach with over 3 years of experience.
As a student here at St. Mary’s, I have noticed a growing demand for activities that focus not just on physical fitness, but also on mental well-being. I’d like to propose a new initiative that combines my love for tennis with my interest in helping students develop both mental resilience and mindfulness.
I would like to offer tennis sessions to the student body, once a week or bi-weekly, where students can choose between two approaches: a session focused on effort, physical resilience, and grit, or a mindfulness-based tennis session, where students will practice present-moment awareness while playing.
In the Effort & Resilience sessions, students will engage in high-energy drills that build both physical endurance and mental toughness. This is perfect for those looking to push themselves. On the other hand, in the Mindfulness-Based Tennis sessions, the focus will be on present-moment awareness while playing, helping students reduce stress, focus better, and experience the sport in a more meditative way.
These tennis sessions would provide students with a much-needed outlet for both physical and mental well-being. With increasing academic pressures, students are seeking more ways to manage stress and maintain mental health. By offering sessions that emphasize both resilience and mindfulness, we can support students in a holistic way, promoting well-being through movement and mindful play.
Depending on the Union’s budget, we could offer these as free sessions or set up a small fee to cover any necessary equipment or expenses.
I’d love to work with the Student Union to make this initiative a regular part of student life here at St. Mary’s. Thank you for your time and consideration. Please let me know if we can meet to discuss further details.
Many thanks, Nina
