Education President Update:
I presented this petition to the director of student operations
in December, during a meeting where I laid out the key arguments. For financial reasons, a reduction in international fees is currently very unlikely. However, the university is open to exploring options to better support students who are struggling to pay their fees. This discussion is currently ongoing with the university.
2024/25 Post Graduate degree fees for international students
Home Fees: £8,580 - £11,340
International Fees: £16,980 - £17,850
International Students pay 97% more than home students!
* International tuition fees have increased dramatically in the last few years
* The cost of living crisis affects both home and international students.
* Postgraduate Education needs to be accessible: Reduced fees make higher education more accessible to a diverse range of students from around the world, irrespective of their financial backgrounds. This fosters a more inclusive and equitable learning environment.
* Competitiveness: Lower fees attract more international students, boosting the international reputation and competitiveness of educational institutions. This can lead to a positive cycle where higher enrollment drives increased investment in educational quality. International students are much more likely to choose a different university for their Masters programme that has a lower fee.

That would be amazing!
At risk of repeating myself from my comment on the other petition; international fees exceed domestic fees across every university in the UK. The British Council state that postgraduate tuition fees cost between £9,000 and £30,000 for international students. However, in this case St Mary's fees seem to slightly exceed the estimated median of £17,109 per year (for undergrad international fees, they are less expensive than the est. median) . As the university does not rank particularly highly for research quality/output, I think it is reasonable that postgraduate fees could be reviewed.
