Education President Update:
The university is very open to this suggestion, and noted it has been brought up previously. The university is currently considering how this change may work in practice and how it may be implemented. Any change to the academic regulations will need to be approved internally by the University's Academic Board.
A further update will follow if this change is approved internally.
Currently in the academic regulations, in order to pass with Merits or Distinctions, the dissertation MUST be above the threshold that you are hoping to get, NOT just your grade average. (So if you are trying for a merit, your dissertation must be 60+ as well as your overall grade average). This theoretically means that anyone who has worked really hard across their course and got a grade average above 60 while their dissertation got a grade of 59 would be denied the merit that they worked so hard for. It is too harsh for the dissertation grade to gatekeep students with high grade averages.
Solution: Base the final grade classification purely on a students grade average
