Student Life President Update:

Caitlin has raised this point with the accommodation team, and the University is planning to include small double/large single beds as part of the wider campus accommodation redevelopment project in every accomodation they are able to do so.

At St Marys university, an undergardaute living in hall would exspect to find the following:

  • Single Bed with mattress (quilt and pillows available for international students)
  • Desk and chair
  • Wardrobe
  • Shelving unit
  • Bedside table
  • Notice board
  • En-suite with shower, toilet and sink

However, in the year of 2024 Single beds are the only options for undergraduate student. It can be argued that some people would like the option to have a double bed, whether this be for comfort or due to some people being 6.5 tall and not fitting comfortably into a single bed.

As seen with the brilliant renovations on Waldegrave 13, double beds have been introduced as an option for postgraduates, so why not the rest of campus?  As the Waldegrave houses and Clive halls in particular have some very large rooms that would certainly have space for a double bed.

Why do this?

It is an investment in the student way of living and sleeping!

As it researched it is known that sleep is an essential ingredient for a successful student which leads to good grades that represent the University. As a University we become competitive in the teaching outcome of students but there should also be a desire to improve the standard of living for students especially those living, all year, on campus.

While there is an argument that this may encourage others to have people stay over, it can be argued that everyone on campus signs a contract stating this is not okay and they will not do this. I would personally argued having double beds as an option would improve St Marys rating in halls against other Universities that have started to do this.

The shared rooms are also very large as they have to accommodate two people sharing and studying in the same space. As two people are sharing a room already, a bigger bed would not lead to anyone staying over but to add comfort to those who do not have current personal space and allows individuals to have room to move when asleep.

Should Accommodation make this investment they could profit from this. I know this would increase the reputation of halls on campus therefore the competition amongst those wanting to live on campus. This option would elevate the living standards and comfort for the students that choose to live on campus. I ask this double bed improvement to be an option as i know there may be those, like me, who would not mind paying more for comfort while studying. I Am also aware there are many students who would not like the price to increase for rooms and do not mind the single bed option, which is why having some rooms like this allow students the choice.
