We've curated a really diverse range of events to celebrate Black History Month at this year. Make sure that you come along to something to support the amazing community that St Mary's has, whoever you are. With the exception of the first event, all of these are completely free - we want everyone to be able to celebrate this month together and have tried to ensure that there are as few barriers as possible.

Below is what's going on - these events were organised by the Union in conjunction with the African Caribbean Society. We're so excited to get started!

Akala - 'The Power Of Education'
Thursday 3 October, 6.15pm - 8pm - Jacqueline Wilson Lecture Theatre, Kingston University Penhryn Road Campus

A talk from inspirational rapper, poet activist and journalist Akala on ‘The power of Education’. This event is being hosted by Kingston University, but St Mary's students are welcome!

Film Screening - 'Remember the Titans' (Directed by Boaz Yakin, 2000)
Friday 4 October, 8pm - G5 Lecture Theatre

We're putting on a free screening of the inspirational and true story of African-American coach Herman Boone who coached the T.C Williams High School American Football team in 1971. This film was chosen by our African Caribbean Society and Film Society!

Film Screening - 42 (Directed by Brian Helgeland, 2013)
Thursday 10 October, 8pm, Lecture Theatre G5

A film screening of '42' which is the true story of Jackie Robinson (a pro baseball player) and his struggles with racism in the deep south in 1945. This film was chosen by the ACS and Film Societies!

Tuesday 15 October, 8pm - The St Mary's University Bar

We've got a special Black History round in our usual Pub Quiz, so come along with your mates and see if you can top the tables!

Black Inspirations - A Photography Exhibition
Thursday 17 October - 12pm, The Refectory and all around Main Campus

A photography exhibition celebrating the black role models who inspire our students and staff. All of the work on display at this exhibition was photographed by Sarah McKenna-Ayres.

Film Screening - Black Panther (Directed by Ryan Coogler, 2018)
Thursday 24 October, 8pm, Lecture Theatre G5

A screening of a modern classic, and the arrival of one of the first black heroes in the Marvel universe. Wakanda forever! This film was chosen by the ACS Society and the Film Society.
